Study Concludes That Any Exposure To Glyphosate Will Increase Risk of Cancer

On the eve of the 2nd Round Up weed killer trial, a new study has found that exposure to Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Round Up, raises cancer risk by 41% for those exposed to it. This analysis, released by researchers at the University of Washington in mid-February, 2019 concluded that any exposure to Glyphosate will significantly increase the risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system.

2nd Round Up Cancer Trial Set To Begin

This new analysis report comes as the 2nd major trial is set to begin in California in a case filed by Edwin Hardeman against Bayer’s Monsanto division, the makers of Round Up weed killer. Mr. Hardeman developed Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma after using Round Up in his yard for many years going back to the 1980s. A similar case filed by a landscape worker in California resulted in a $289 million jury verdict against Bayer-Monsanto in August 2018. (That verdict was later reduced to $78 million by the trial judge.) During the course of that trial, evidence was presented that Bayer-Monsanto knew of the risks of Round Up exposure years ago and not only failed to warn consumers of the risk, but actively worked to suppress the hazards by trying to influence federal regulators and paying for “independent” research studies designed to show that there is no risk.

Round Up Exposure Raises Cancer Risk by 41%

The co-author of the University of Washington study, Rachel Shaffer, stated that their research: “provides the most up-to-date analysis of glyphosate and its link with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, incorporating a 2018 study of more than 54,000 people who work as licensed pesticide applicators." The researchers concluded that there was a “compelling link” between exposure to glyphosate and the development of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and that such exposure raises the risk by 41% over unexposed persons. These results provide further support for the 2015 conclusion of the World Health Organization that glyphosate is probably a human carcinogen and serves to bolster the thousands of lawsuits that have been filed against Bayer-Monsanto in the last couple of years.

At the same time, Bayer-Monsanto continues to maintain that use of glyphosate is completely safe and poses no cancer risk.

Trial Watch

It will be interesting to watch the developments of this newest trial as the proceedings progress, particularly as to what effect the trial result has on the prospects of settlement of the pending claims and on the value of Bayer’s stock. In the wake of last years $289 million verdict, stock values dropped almost 20% to their lowest levels in over 5 years. If this happens again, the pressure from Bayer’s stockholders may force the company to change tactics and try to negotiate a settlement of the claims rather than continuing to maintain that Round Up is completely safe.
